Learn How to Package Empty Inkjet and Laser Cartridges Correctly.

Inkjet Cartridges

A minimum of 30 or more acceptable empty inkjet cartridges per box are required, as long as the box weighs less than 70 pounds. It’s important to make sure you don’t throw inkjet cartridges loosely in a box without the print heads being protected.

Laser Cartridges

A minimum of 10 acceptable empty laser cartridges are required per box, as long as the box weighs less than 70 pounds. Most lasers cartridges weigh about 2 pounds, so even up to 20 lasers in a box is fine.

Please Note: If you are already sending 30 inkjet cartridges in a box, you can add any quantity of laser cartridges to that box as well.

Only send once-used cartridges that are on our list — do not send compatible or previously refilled cartridges as well as “questionable” cartridges, random cartridges, or cartridges that are not on our list.

Packaging

Recycled printer cartridges should not touch each other and should be individually wrapped. The easiest way to package empty inkjet cartridges is to wrap the cartridge in newspaper. Inkjet cartridges can also be sent in ziplock bags or placed back in their original bags or boxes.

Empty laser cartridges can be removed from their original box and triple-wrapped in newspaper or wrapped in bubble-wrap. They can also be placed back in the bubble-bag the cartridge came in. With smaller laser cartridges, you can place them back in their original box, but please make sure to place a minimum of 10 boxes within a larger box. Here are some other things to keep in mind:

  1. Do not send us any box of empty laser cartridges containing less than 10 cartridges.
  2. Make sure each box is secure with no room for cartridges to bounce around during shipment.
  3. Boxes should not weigh more than 70 pounds. Most empty laser cartridges weigh, on average, approximately 2 pounds each.
  4. If you have 8 laser cartridges that are in their original box, and all of the boxes are a similar size, then those boxes can be bundled and taped together. Do not be conservative on tape as lack of tape will cause boxes to separate.
  5. Boxes should be packed securely and tightly to prevent cartridges from being bounced around during shipment. Heavy corrugated boxes are preferred.
  6. Make sure that cartridges never directly touch one another.

Penalties for Incorrect Packaging

For every empty laser cartridge that is not packaged adequately, or that is not on our Accepted Cartridge List or Inventory List, we will deduct $1.00 from your payment. Since shipping can be costly with laser cartridges it is very important that we only get refillable cartridges that are in good shape. Also, since inkjet and laser cartridges have parts that are fragile, without adequate protection they will get damaged and you will lose out on the monetary value of that cartridge.

Pre-Paid Labels

After your boxes are ready for shipment, place our prepaid label on the outside of them. You can Call FedEx at 1-888-777-6040 to schedule a pick up, or if FedEx delivers to your school or organization regularly, simply give your boxes to the driver next time they come to your location. FedEx will deliver boxes to Inkjets for Education and shipping charges will be incurred by us.

Don’t forget to save your “shipper receipt” which can be peeled off the top of your pre-paid labels.
